The Time My Daughter Ruined My Makeup Kit & I Didn’t Punish Her

Whoever knows me well knows I am a makeup junkie. My hobbies include looking at makeup, reading about makeup, trying makeup, buying makeup and dreaming about makeup. I have drawers full of makeup pallets, lipsticks, mascaras, eye-shadows, brushes, highlighters and what not. My poor husband gave up on me 10 years ago and has learnt to live with my obsession for everything that shines, shimmers and glitters.

I know that one needs to have a system in place when you have so much stuff. Only having a large makeup holder on the dressing table and a drawer full of makeup items scattered around isn’t the best option. I was thinking of buying a good makeup bag and a multi-functional makeup organizer from Yazzii for long time. We go on lot of family trips hence jewelry bags and pouches were also on my list.

I have three beautiful daughters and my youngest daughter Myrah shares my passion. She understands that my makeup is off limits and she can only use it in my presence. But how can that stop a nine-year-old from trying a few lip balms and makeup brushes in solitude when no one is looking.

Last Friday the girls demanded meat balls and spaghetti for dinner and a big chocolate cake to enjoy their new tree house that their dad had built a week ago. Myrah came rushing to the kitchen asking if she could take a few things from my room to play dress up and I said, “You can have anything you want my pumpkin”. Little did I realise or pay attention that all my favourite makeup was lying around on my dressing table and that’s the first thing she would go for.

She packed a bunch of brushes from my makeup holder and a substantial supply of lipsticks, lotions, eyeshadows, foundations and my brand-new makeup kit from Sephora and ran to join her sisters on the treetop. It wasn’t until 8pm when I went to deliver their meal that I realised that all my expensive and loved makeup was smothered all over her face and she was standing right in front of me with one of my LV handbags in her hand pretending to be Mini Me. Its logical that I was very upset and angry, and I literally had fumes coming out of my ears, but I stayed calm. It was the moment of truth and I didn’t want to overreact. So, I started counting to ten and slowly I could see an act of innocence as oppose to defiance and I smiled at her. I still remember those big beautiful eyes staring back at me with fear and overfilled with tears waiting to bring a tsunami. When I smiled, she smiled and then she ran towards me. She hugged me tight and said, “Mom I am Sorry” and I said its OK my darling you look very beautiful.

Yes, I did lose a lot of makeup and money but that wasn’t her fault it was mine. Had I paid attention to what was needed and acted on time this wouldn’t have happened. That same weekend I jumped online and bought a lovely makeup bag with detachable pockets and a travel wallet from Yazzii. I also purchased a cosmetic storage box to store most of my makeup on the top shelf of my closet and a multifunctional travel makeup bag for travelling. Ever since that day Myrah never forgets to take permission for everything and don’t delay in doing things that are important...
